Fire Tablet Differences

Amazon currently produces two main models of its Fire HD tablets, the Fire HD 8 with an 8-inch screen and the HD 10 with a 10-inch screen. There are also kids versions of both models.

The Fire HD 8 was updated with a new release in 2022 that offered a faster processor, improved battery life, a stronger glass screen. The Fire HD 10 was last updated in 2021.

Both tablets enable you to:

  • Watch videos on Netflix, Hulu or more apps
  • Connect with Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, and more through Amazon’s Appstore
  • Use video chat apps like Zoom, or ask Alexa to make video calls to friends and family.
  • Check email, update shopping lists, and set reminders. Use your favorite apps like Microsoft Office, OneNote, and Dropbox.
  • Use hands-free with Alexa, including on/off toggle.

Both offer an excellent value, but the HD 10 with a larger screen, better resolution, and better performance is worth the extra $25 or so, according to expert reviewers like PC Magazine and CNET.

“The Fire HD 8 is still a little slow, its cameras are mediocre, and its screen isn’t as sharp as more expensive devices. But when you consider how affordable it is, it becomes an appealing option for Amazon Prime subscribers, first-time tablet buyers, or anyone seeking a robust spare slate to carry on adventures,” writes PC Magazine.

“If you’re concerned about performance or screen quality, however, the Fire HD 10 is faster and has a sharper, brighter screen, and thus retains our Editor’s Choice award.”

Fire HD 10 Review

The Fire HD 10 was reissued in 2021 with a higher speed processor and better battery life. PC Magazine gave it an Editor’s Choice and Excellent rating.

“The 2021 edition of Amazon’s Fire HD 10 gives you by far the most power and features you’re going to get for less than $200, and earns our Editors’ Choice award,” the magazine said.

The Fire HD 10 Kids edition also got an Editor’s Choice award.

Below is an intro and review from PC Magazine.

Fire Tablet vs Kindle Reader

The Fire tablet is not the same as the Amazon Kindle ebook reader.  On the plus side, the Fire tablet can be used for far more than reading ebooks.  It is a full-color, high definition tablet that you can use to watch movies, browse the internet, use social media, listen to music – most anything you can do with a much more expensive tablet like an iPad.

The Fire Tablet is not the best device for just reading books – the Kindle Paperwhite wins that distinction – but it’s much cheaper and much more versatile.
