More on Richard Burton

Richard Burton CBE; born Richard Walter Jenkins Jr.; 10 November 1925 – 5 August 1984) was a Welsh actor.

Noted for his mellifluous baritone voice, Burton established himself as a formidable Shakespearean actor in the 1950s and gave a memorable performance as Hamlet in 1964. He was called “the natural successor to Olivier” by critic Kenneth Tynan. Burton’s perceived failure to live up to those expectations disappointed some critics and colleagues; his heavy drinking added to his reputation as a great performer who had wasted his talent. Nevertheless, he is widely regarded as one of the finest actors of his generation.

Burton was nominated for an Academy Award seven times but never won. He was nominated for his performances in My Cousin Rachel (1952), The Robe (1953), Becket (1964), The Spy Who Came In from the Cold (1965), Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? (1966), Anne of the Thousand Days (1969) and Equus (1977). He received numerous accolades, including a BAFTA Award, a Golden Globe Award and a Grammy Award. He received the Tony Award for Best Actor in a Musical for his portrayal of King Arthur in the Lerner and Loewe musical Camelot (1960).

The 1960s marked the peak of Burton’s international stardom, largely due to his involvement in the film Cleopatra (1963), where he met and fell in love with Elizabeth Taylor. Their passionate, turbulent, and highly publicised romance made them one of the most famous celebrity couples in the world, dominating headlines for over a decade. They would marry and divorce twice, starring in eleven films together, including the critically acclaimed Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? (1966) and The Taming of the Shrew (1967).
Professionally, the 1960s were a period of significant achievement, with Burton earning several more Oscar nominations for films like Becket (1964), The Spy Who Came In from the Cold (1965), and Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? (1966). He became one of the highest-paid actors in the world, commanding fees of a million dollars or more per film. On Broadway, he won a Tony Award for his iconic portrayal of King Arthur in the musical Camelot (1960).
Despite his immense talent, Burton’s life was also marked by personal struggles, primarily chronic alcoholism, which affected his health and, at times, his career choices. Critics often lamented that he “wasted his talent” on less distinguished films, although his performances were consistently intense and charismatic. His heavy drinking led to serious health issues, including liver and kidney disease, in his later years.
Burton was married five times in total: to Sybil Williams (1949-1963), Elizabeth Taylor (1964-1974 and 1975-1976), Suzy Hunt (1976-1982), and Sally Hay (1983-1984). He had two daughters, Kate and Jessica, with Sybil, and adopted Elizabeth Taylor’s daughter Maria. His complex personal life, particularly his dramatic relationship with Taylor, was a constant subject of public fascination.
In his later career, he continued to deliver powerful performances, notably earning his seventh and final Oscar nomination for Equus (1977), for which he also won a Golden Globe Award. He also had a memorable role in the action film Where Eagles Dare (1968) and his final film, Nineteen Eighty-Four (1984), where he played the sinister O’Brien.
Richard Burton died on August 5, 1984, at the age of 58, from a brain haemorrhage at his home in Céligny, Switzerland. He was buried in a red suit, with a copy of Dylan Thomas’s poems, in a plot next to his final wife, Sally.
Burton’s legacy endures as a towering figure in both classical theatre and popular cinema. He is remembered for his brilliant mind, a passion for literature (he once said “home is where the books are”), his extraordinary generosity, and his powerful, resonant voice. An actor who blended classical technique with raw emotion, Richard Burton’s performances continue to captivate audiences and inspire future generations of actors.
