Turner Classic Movies is celebrating the 101st birthday of Paul Newman on Monday, January 26, 2026.
Starting at 6:30 am on Monday, Jan. 26, TCM will show six of Newman’s films, including The Prize and Cool Hand Luke. Newman was born on Jan. 26, 1925, and died in 2008.

Paul Newman’s Life and Career
Paul Leonard Newman, born on January 26, 1925, in Shaker Heights, Ohio, was a man of many talents. He was an Oscar-winning actor, film director, racing car driver, philanthropist, and entrepreneur.

His striking good looks, intelligence, and charisma made him a screen legend, and his contributions to both the arts and society left an indelible mark on the world.
Early Life and Education
Newman’s interest in theater began at a young age. By the age of 10, he was already performing in stage productions. He attended Kenyon College, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in drama and economics in 1949. After college, he toured with several summer stock companies before attending the Yale School of Drama.
Acting Career
Newman’s Broadway debut came in 1953 with the play “Picnic,” where he met his future wife, actress Joanne Woodward. His first starring role in a film was in “The Silver Chalice” (1954), but it was his performance in “The Hustler” (1961) that truly launched his career. Over the years, he starred in numerous iconic films, including “Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid” (1969), “The Sting” (1973), and “The Color of Money” (1986), for which he won the Academy Award for Best Actor.
Philanthropy and Entrepreneurship
Beyond his acting career, Newman was a dedicated philanthropist. In 1982, he co-founded Newman’s Own, a food company that donated all post-tax profits and royalties to charity. As of 2021, these donations totaled over $570 million. He also founded the SeriousFun Children’s Network in 1988, providing camps for children with serious illnesses.
Personal Life
Newman was married twice. His first marriage was to Jackie Witte, with whom he had three children. He later married Joanne Woodward in 1958, and they had three children together. Newman passed away on September 26, 2008, at the age of 83.
