At 8/7c on Tuesdays starting May 11, 2021, PBS will broadcast “Extra Life: A Short History of Living Longer,” a four-part weekly series that tells the little-known story of the innovations in science and medicine that doubled the human lifespan in less than a century. The show is hosted by historian Steven Johnson and author David Olusoga.

The May 18 episode, Medical Drugs, focuses on medical innovations that combat illness directly, particularly antibiotics, and the development of antiviral drugs for HIV.
