Is AARP Worth It?

Is AARP worth $16 a year?  Having been a member for about 20 years, I have to say yes.

An AARP membership is regularly priced at $16 a year, but you can get it for less. And you’ll discover many benefits for seniors and non-seniors alike, including 10% off at Outback Steakhouse, 10% off at Hilton Hotels, and 35% off Budget Car Rental.

AARP Membership Cost

AARP membership is available to any adult 18 or over. AARP is regularly priced at $16 a year but new members can get a one-year membership for $12.  Also, new and existing members can save with a multi-year membership: 3 years for $43 or 5 years for $63.  An AARP membership also comes with these free gifts:

  • A second membership for anyone in your household
  • A free trunk organizer or day bag.

My favorite AARP Benefits

Every year that I’ve been an AARP member, I’ve used it for discounts, and have seen new benefits added every year.  Here are my favorite and most-used AARP benefits.

  • Outback, Carrabba’s and Bonefish Discount: These chain restaurants are among my favorites and give me 10% off my total bill when I show my AARP card.
  • Hilton and more Hotel Discounts: Whenever booking a hotel online, I enter “AARP” in the Promotion Code field to see if they have a special rate for members. Or, on the phone I just ask if the agent if they give an AARP discount.  Some hotels, like Hilton, have a Special Rates section on their booking site where you just click on AARP Rate to get about 10% off.  You’ll also qualify for late (2:00 pm) checkout.
  • Avis, Budget Car Rental 35% off: I have gotten significant discounts at Avis and Budget, usually about 35% off.

AARP Age Requirement

When it first organized in 1958, you had to be 55 to join AARP. That is no longer true – anyone 18 and can be an AARP member.

“While AARP is dedicated to people over 50, there is no minimum age to join,” AARP says. “People of all ages can get an AARP membership for as low as $12 for the first year with automatic renewal.”
